Not steeper, just a little more time would need to be spent. 3D principles are the same no matter what software you're using, so if Houdini/VFX/sim work is what you're going for, might as well start with Houdini! Apprentice is great and Indie is only $200/yr.

It's hard to say as there were a couple of years of start/stopping as life kept intervening. I came in with a general knowledge of 3D from Maya but making the switch to points and nodes took some adjustment. My first pro gig was 2021 but I still have days of despair (but more of triumph).
