I'm often asked how I'm liking San Francisco (and the broader Bay Area) after my wife and I moved here ~2.5 years ago from the Midwest (Kansas).

I've started describing San Francisco as the city of serendipity.

On moving to San Francisco, the city of serendipity
My personal reflection on life in San Francisco from a Midwestern. The opportunities, the energy, and the uniqueness of the city offset against the forces that make it a hustle.

Drag and drop progress: add "order" construct, and allow drop into new swimlane. Graph libraries don't have ranking logic for single nodes (no edges), so this is my implementation. Performance getting better; lots of debug overhead.

Next is fixing drop previews/ hover states.

Drag and drop UI's on the web looks effortless on the surface.

Under the hood: drag/drop listeners, recalculating drop zones, shadow nodes, rebuilding the graph, calculating chain breaks/reconnects, re-rendering nodes, etc.

Still WIP (buggy!) myself, but fun to see it coming together.

You can just do things.

Years ago I designed and CNC'd these simple wood pieces that act as extension of my (very old) glass desk, allowing me to clamp down monitor arms in a way you can't do directly with glass, and avoiding the need for hefty base. Still working well!

Stumbled upon this home price heatmap somewhat by accident and found the honeycomb look so pleasing... although the home prices themselves aren't as alluring.

All the cool kids use LLMs to buy clothes these days. The @workos.bsky.social mcp.shop experience feels a bit like magic.

Nothing like a price hike to reprioritize your todo list to migrate domains. Still miss Google Domains :(

Inspired by this trend of "interactive" feature cards I've seen on a lot of websites lately... CSS transform is underrated.

I remember when the Laravel starter kit was this welcome screen. Pretty sure that's how I learned MVC/ routing as a concept, just by studying how this one page was rendered.

Don't forget the value of a starter kit can be different to everyone. Opinionated code is great to learn!

Need inspiration for a good slide visualization?

Check the D3js examples page. For example, I took inspiration from the sunburst visualization to create the slide on the right.

Finally tackled some simple SVG animation for a landing page refresh. Easer than I anticipated for a nice outcome.

Contrary to popular opinion - I used Vue❤️

Best new feature of Laravel Cloud: this app architecture visualization.

... and I've only had access for a week. Laravel team ships!

Bad habit or fine for @laravelphp development?

I haphazardly create test routes (conditionally not requiring this file in prod), to run little unit tests. Particularly useful when I want to isolate steps in a workflow and dd() the results without relying on frontend logic.

In 2023, I had the opportunity to stay at a true escape from the world, in a home right off of PCH in Malibu. With the Palisades fire, I hold hope for momentum in rebuilding, not just for the community, but for future travelers who will appreciate the experience as much as I did.
