Kiwi foot soldier in the fight for freedom. Pro-journalism, pro-science, pro-climate action. Anti-MAGA, anti-Kremlin, anti-fascism. Resist! Resist! Resist!
YouTube is also paying $22 million to Trump's ballroom as part of a lawsuit settlement over the suspension of his account following the 2021 insurrection at the US Capitol. I have just cancelled my YouTube premium subscription.

It's a small comfort to know that when the USA goes full Gilead, Scott Bessent and his husband will be hanging from construction cranes while Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert will be selling their coochies in the bargain basement at Jezebels.

How about lengthy jail sentences for people who vandalise a constitutional democracy!

Sorry to hear about your situation, James. I just donated US $200. I am sending you love and hugs from Aotearoa New Zealand.

Intergenerational wealth; the original affirmative action.

I am looking forward to reading this book which arrived in the letter box yesterday. As a Kiwi and resident of Te Tai Tokerau Northland, Aotearoa New Zealand's most northern region, I may be Brian Groom's most distant fan.

I flew Cessna 172s at Ardmore and Tauranga airports when I was training for my private pilot's licence. Apart from the wings being above the fuselage, they're a similar plane to the Piper Archer. Safe travels!

Good point. Trump admires dictators, but he is historically illiterate and is intellectually incapable of masterminding the plan that is being rolled out here.

Well said. I was wondering when someone would make this comparison. Trump's entire political strategy is lifted from Hitler's playbook.

I can thoroughly recommend this superbly written, solidly researched book, which catalogues Manchester's often overlooked contribution to human progress and forces us to consider the importance of so-called second cities everywhere. Thanks, Brian, for giving the world this marvellous book.

This was how British Prime Minister Winston Churchill stood up to fascism 85 years ago. His words are still relevant today.

Who thinks President Biden should declare a climate emergency and refuse to leave office on the basis that Trump's climate change denial represents an existential threat to the American people? He could argue that he is exercising his constitutional powers and therefore immune to prosecution.

Let's put an unqualified talkshow host with a drinking problem in charge of the military of the world's most powerful nation. What could possibly go wrong?

The Guardian is one of the few international news platforms that isn't owned by a billionaire and hasn't bent the knee to Trump. I am still mulling whether to renew my subscription to The Washington Post or double down on my support for The Guardian.

How about California - the world's largest sub-national economy - sends a laundry list to Washington DC before handing over more federal taxes that subsidize backward states like Wyoming and Tennessee which these corn-fed basics represent.

24 people dead, and this so-called Christian can't even send 'thoughts and prayers'. Does she really think her God is OK with her lies, hatred and willful ignorance? Once again the Republicans remind us that they have branched off the human race.

That used to happen to me. Now, I travel with two bags; one for clothes and one for books. Speaking of books, this beauty just arrived on the rural delivery. I am planning a sentimental journey to Manchester later this year to savour the city that shaped my musical tastes as a youth in the 1980s.

Unity Books in Wellington has a bigger offering, and there are some excellent secondhand bookshops (Artybees and Pegasus Books) a short walk away. You can easily spend a day in bookshops, especially if you make the trek to Newtown where there are two more shops with a great range of books.

Mace and MTG (a middle-aged divorcee) want to take America back to the 1950s. So, my question is, when are they going to resign from Congress to raise children, bake cakes and be subservient to their husbands?
January 11, 2025 at 7:37 PM
That looks like a couple of hours of enjoyable browsing in Unity Books. I would happily make space for all of those books on my nightstand.

I am guessing that ABC, NBC and CBS also failed to mention that 2024 was the hottest year on record for the world's land and oceans.
