Philanthopy definitely matters, but is a very small fraction of capital available for R&D in the US. These data are from the National Science & Technology Indicators (2025) and describes all fields of science, not biomedical science of biopharmaceuticals. ncses.nsf.gov/data-collect...

Our 2023 JAMA HF study was featured on CNBC as John Flavin, Portal Innovations Founder & CEO, discussed how NIH funding cuts could be detrimental for the U.S. pharmaceutical industry and drug development. Our study found that the NIH provided funding for 354/356 drugs approved by the FDA 2010-19.
