Make no mistake: what we are witnessing today in the United States is not a healthy democratic shift towards conservative values. It is a reckless bulldozing of rule of law, checks and balances, healthy debate, scientific thought, human dignity and the most basic rights of citizens. (10/11)

It won’t be long before there will be no more civil servants left in the government. Only loyalists to a dictator or passive accomplices afraid of retaliation. I’ve seen it happen first hand several times, I can see the patterns, and it makes me deeply sad. (9/11)

But revenge is not progress, it is a never-ending spiral of destruction. Progress is having enough trust with people we disagree with to be able to learn from each other and set some basic ground rules for coexisting together. (7/11)

As someone who personally knows many people on the left, the center and the right who have been unfairly persecuted and/or imprisoned by dictators or corrupt justice systems in several countries, I can understand that it can feel like progress to see the oppressors become the oppressed. (6/11)

You may feel strongly that this administration is simply correcting the unjust abuses of power of previous liberal administrations. But when the tyrants we are empowering in the name of reform finish crushing every opposing force, you will realize nobody is left to defend you (5)

A healthy democracy allows for mutual learning, and necessarily swings back and forth between progressive and conservative leadership, to provide an escape valve for the negative consequences of each ideology’s shortsightedness. (3/11)
