The ending of the movie implies that he did what he did too soon and if he'd just waited, the mist would've cleared and they'd all be okay, but there's a theory that that was the expiation Carmody was talking about and the mist wouldn't have cleared if he didn't do it!

I feel like they didn't know they used Flavor-Aid in Jonestown until after production wrapped so they just had someone ADR a quick line about it in post.
