For the second and third meanwhile, the position of Grimsby's left-back (number three Jayden Sweeney) is the notable factor, as Kane Wilson's duty to follow him inside again opens up spaces out wide which are successfully exploited.

You can see Liam Kelly indicating as much in the second example.

Throughout the game, MK Dons appeared to be running a man-to-man marking system; a detail which is a factor in all three goals they conceded.

For the first, Grimsby have used swift passing and neat movement to pull several players out of position, creating space in behind down the left.

Chesterfield take on Crewe Alexandra tonight in the EFL Trophy; a competition in which clubs must field at least four outfield "qualifying players" to avoid a fine of up to £5,000.

The Spireites (even if they decide to rotate heavily) should have no real issue fulfilling that quota. ⬇️

On the latter point though (and fair warning, this is dependent on both my maths and understanding of the EFL’s squad regulations) Chesterfield *should* still have one ‘squad list’ spot vacant if they do want to draft in a free agent defender between now and January.

Chesterfield's current front four depth following the loan addition of Ronan Darcy from Wigan Athletic.

Not half bad, is it? 😅

This almost certainly will not last so I’m exercising the right to bank the EFL Expert™ points now whilst there’s still chance. 😅

We're reaching the stage of pre-season where attention is (understandably) turning to Chesterfield's opening day line-up against Barrow.

This is about where I'm at.

(Swap Devan Tanton for Vontae Daley-Campbell and Matt Dibley-Dias for Tom Naylor/Luke Butterfield depending on injuries.)

Finally, just a quick personal apology for the slight delay rolling these out.

Naturally, happened to be on holiday when this string of transfer announcements were made 🇬🇷

Back and ready for the 2025/26 season now though, and have plenty of things planned for the near future!

📍SMH Group Stadium

A pleasure to be on duty here for the final(?) time this season.

Chesterfield could yet host a leg of potential play-off semi-final, but a win against Morecambe this afternoon feels non-negotiable if that’s to be the case.

📍SMH Group Stadium

A particular pleasure to be on duty this afternoon for what is set to be a massive Easter Monday meeting of Chesterfield and Bradford City.

Play-off, promotion and title ambitions all potentially on the line here.

Coming back to this, as it was quite a smart subtle change.

Allowed Chesterfield to maintain a defensive '+1' across the back line (offering protection on the cover) whilst also adding extra numbers in the central area by allowing Harvey Araujo to tuck in from left-back.

📍A pleasant evening at the SMH Group Stadium, which is hosting tonight’s Derbyshire Senior Challenge Cup final between Alfreton Town and Buxton.

A pleasure to be aiding the @ndrsport.bsky.social team in delivering the usual social media coverage of tonight’s all-National League North clash.

Good afternoon from a glorious SMH Group Stadium ☀️

Just five games left for Chesterfield now, who’ll look to kickstart a bright end to season and maintain a *slight* glimmer of hope of reaching the play-offs with a win against Fleetwood Town.

📍SMH Group Stadium.

Here we go then.

Six games to go for Chesterfield. Seven points to make up on those in the play-off places. One crucial game in hand against Gillingham this evening to try and take a chunk out of that gap.

📍Good evening from the SMH Group Stadium!

A pleasure as always to be on duty for tonight’s League Two fixture between Chesterfield and Carlisle United.

Could carry big consequences in both the play-off and survival races.

No long form pre-Carlisle United content from me (apologies, will be back soon) but line-up wise, would be intrigued to see Chesterfield try this.

Harsh on Ollie Banks, but think the last couple of games have demonstrated the impact of natural width, so somebody has to make way here.

📍The SMH Group Stadium.

Feels a long time (in many ways) since Chesterfield demolished Doncaster Rovers in their last outing here.

Any lingering play-off hopes may rest on rediscovering that form against Crewe Alexandra today.

Chesterfield and Bromley have played out some memorable contests in recent seasons; here’s hoping for another this evening.

A pleasure to be on duty for this afternoon’s League Two fixture between Chesterfield and Port Vale.

Should be a decent contest.
