Soon I had finished my half, and my friend had arrived. We wanted to go for dinner, but Hurt was nowhere to be found - not outside, upstairs - nowhere.

I was waiting on a friend to arrive. I slotted in beside him, ordered a half pint and said hello. After a few mins he excused himself and asked me to look after his Christmas shopping.

I met John Hurt in The French House just before Christmas 10-15 years ago. He was sat alone at the bar enjoying a post-shopping drink, his feet surrounded by shopping bags.
He looked like he had just walked off stage and was wearing a colourful pakol and smoking jacket (possibly dressing gown).
