We looked closely at this back in July. Really complex picture, but the anti-reform coalition is definitely there… cdn.prod.website-files.com/6578727b2437...

Hello politics/psephology people. Is this still thought of as a good account of turnout dynamics? Do the findings around habit forming and whether you vote in the first three elections of your adult life still hold?

Ultimately, though …

In our @thinksinsight.bsky.social focus groups, participants found it almost impossible to populate a timeline of the last year. In the survey they could recall almost nothing positive. One big negative

Given their historically low vote share in 2024, this chart should worry the Tories. Consideration of voting Conservative among those who didn’t in 2024 is the lowest of all the main parties.

For their part, Reform UK voters are really quite content with their choices:

The Reform UK threat to the Conservatives is clear.

Over half of Labours 2024 vote say there’s at least some chance they’d vote Lib Dem or Green if there were another election tomorrow. But the 25% who’re considering Reform are more serious about abandoning Labour…

Lastly, the promise that really matters is less about the specifics of which tax or exactly how many houses. The promise that really matters is the promise of change.

Not rejoining the customs union seems to be a promise where the government has some leeway.
February 20, 2025 at 1:36 PM
4. Labour 2024 voters take a different attitude. Believing a promise has been broken on housing or NHS really matters. But negative outcomes on tax or net zero are viewed no worse if you think they breach a manifesto promise.
February 20, 2025 at 1:36 PM
2. Majorities can identify genuine pledges from Labours manifesto as such (with the exception of the pledge not to rejoin the customs union).

But people are less good at recognising the fake pledges. Only 1% were able to sort all ten into fake vs genuine.
February 20, 2025 at 1:36 PM
1. More people say governments should stick to election promises come what may, than say promises can be broken to do what’s right for the country.

But worth noting the proportion saying “do what’s right” increases to 42% among 2024 Labour voters.

Cons lost lots of votes to Reform in 2024 GE. Today, over 1 in 5 of those who did vote Tory in ‘24 now say Farage and Reform would be the best government for the UK.
