SENTINELS (1988)
Acrylic on Canvas - 22” x 33”

After more than a decade of continuous illustration work, this was my first non-commissioned painting. Who can resist imagining a peaceful world where children are enjoying nature and the symbols of war are falling into ruin? 1/5
Backed by a sheer cliff wall, monumental statues line the shore like sentinels facing out to sea. The statues resemble the Egyptian god Horus with hawk-like faces and a shawl of feathers. They each kneel resting weight forward on front limbs, but each statue erodes more than the last as the line extends down the shore. Children stand on the nearest hawk monument. One holds as staff and stares out as a line of doves flies past.

A sweeping panoramic photo sweeping across one corner of the gallery at the Riverside Art Museum. The juxtaposition of paintings gives a real sense of scale with gallery art like THE BIG QUESTION occupying more space than THE WHITE DRAGON and A PRINCESS OF MARS combined. This represents only a fraction of the 50 paintings that were displayed.

NaNoWriMo's mission is to "provide the structure, community, and encouragement to help people use their voices, achieve creative goals, and build new worlds—on and off the page." We fulfill our mission by supporting the humans doing the writing. Please see this related post that speaks to our overall position on nondiscrimination with respect to approaches to creativity, writer's resources, and personal choice. We also want to be clear in our belief that the categorical condemnation of Artificial Intelligence has classist and ableist undertones, and that questions around the use of Al tie to questions around privilege.
