This was everything I wanted a third Monkey Island to be. I found the ending disappointing - it just sort-of stops - but loved the journey.

My friend Adam - well, I say "friend", he'd later go on to steal my Game Boy - has this on his SNES. I loved it. The first twin-stick shooter I ever played!

Another board game adaptation, and as with most board game adaptations this was perfect for me because I had zero friends. A fine adaptation with some rules changes for technical reasons.

I went back to this recently and it's… fine. It's okay. But God, I spent so much time playing this (and its sequel) as a kid. Still has a banger soundtrack, though.

Such a great game. I think you could make a really solid argument for this being the pinnacle of the early 00s PC FPS space. Loved this game, miss it every day.

File under games I am awful at but keep coming back to anyway.

Real ones remember the cheat code on the Amiga version of this game.

After the relative safety of Monkey Island, playing a LucasArts game where you can die (or get arrested!) presented significant challenges for young Ben. I don't think I ever finished this game, but I got pretty far in and loved it.

I feel like @regretagarbo.rip would probably appreciate this.

My first exposure to Indiana Jones. As a kid, I never got past the first level. But I played it a lot. A LOT.
I did eventually get further as an adult, but I don't think I finished it without cheats. It's aggressively difficult.

Of all the games in the MGS series, this is the one I've replayed the most. I keep coming back to it. Some people hate the over-the-top cutscene animations, but I love how much TTS leans into the ridiculous anime nature of MGS.

Speaking of Puyo Puyo, this is how I first experienced it - a freeware game included on a cover-mounted floppy disk for an Amiga magazine (Google thinks it would've been Amiga Power, but I'm confident it was Amiga Format or CU Amiga as we rarely got Power). Cracking good fun.

I think I downloaded the ROM for this one based purely on the fact it had "Tetris" in the name, and discovered a game that bore more similarity to Puyo Puyo than to Tetris. But I fell in love with it. Still a favorite!

As a kid, I LOVED Sonic the Hedgehog… right up until I played my first Sonic game, which I found (and still find) horribly shallow and dreadfully boring.
Sonic Mania, though? Incredible. Made me see why people love these games to begin with.

Licensed games are an incredibly mixed bag (see previous: ThunderCats), but the Futurama game was a ton of fun and captured the vibe of the TV show perfectly. Plus that extended mix of the theme that plays over the main menu is an absolute banger.

Long before Star Trek Online or Bridge Simulator, this freeware fan game on the Amiga allowed me to fulfill my childhood Trek dreams. I still dip into this game from time to time.

The only team-based FPS I ever spent any real time with. I've dipped very briefly into others like Marvel Rivals and Overwatch, but none of them held my attention the way TF2 did. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for TF2 Classic.

The second game in the Body Blows series, but the first I played. Has a wonderful Smash Bros-y approach to special moves - the inputs are the same for every character, but the moves are difficult. The first beat em up I fell in love with.

My dad's friend Larry installed the Amiga version on our A1200. This was pre-whdload, and the HD installed version didn't have enough memory for the samples and some visual effects, so I willingly played it from the floppies. It came on 4 disks and had obscene load times.

The first multiplayer game I played in Xbox Live, and probably my favorite online multiplayer game of that year. I only ever touched the campaign once, and found it so utterly derivative and disappointing I never finished it. But I spent hours playing online.

I've talked about this on PortsCenter, but SimCity was a huge part of my childhood. We had it for the Amiga, but it's probably the SNES version that's my favorite.

This never got released in Europe, but I discovered it thanks to emulation. After playing FF VII at a friend's, I became fascinated and wanted to try more. The other games I played didn't grab me, but this one absolutely did. Undoubtedly the best game in the series.

The original, and the first game in the series I played. Still my favorite to this day, though the remake is a VERY close second. Walks that B-movie horror line much more deftly than most games in the series. Claire's story is my favorite.
