Good questions! Here we used a do-nothing control (instruction without prequestions), which is typical. In answer to "How could they not [help]?" -- a couple recent studies in real classes found no benefit (Carpenter et al, 2018; Gellar et al, 2017)... So it's honestly been murky

Hey thanks for the shout out @amiyake.bsky.social! This was a wild adventure, conducted as part of the XPRIZE Digital Learning Challenge...which I often describe as a grown-up science fair with very tight deadlines for data collection! Lots of credit goes to the coauthors for making it happen 🙌
