Which obviously meant a foreign outside agent had no way to massively force the BBC's hand on an issue.

I remember hearing a maybe apocryphal story years ago about Top Gear (the original version) giving a really poor review of some American brand car. The CEO of that brand demanded all advertising be taken away as punishment, and their execs had to explain that the BBC took no advertising money.
