I think this paper downplays the problems and the extent to which they are fixable. But I agree that trying to be like the physical sciences is not the right path (and has create problematic incentives). I also agree with your take that it is not a crisis, it’s just a problem we need to address.

The broader implication is that you don’t always have to change people’s conspiracy beliefs, sometimes you can just mitigate their negative impact. This is good news because changing conspiracy beliefs can be really tough to do.
