took a letterpress workshop this weekend

even though the roof is removable, i wish the interior was more easily viewable with the full build

and one final detail: the manual says to orient one of these little guys TOWARDS the spire, because the statue of St. Thomas (modeled after Notre Dame architect Viollet-le-Duc) does in reality. neat!

holy shit it's done. three days! by far the biggest set i've built and it sure looks the part
May 6, 2025 at 1:58 AM
home stretch. weird part alert: 40 MAGIC WANDS
May 5, 2025 at 11:31 PM
phase 3 FINALLY done. so many windows. so many buttresses. this thing is DENSE. wrapping it up tomorrow!
May 5, 2025 at 1:52 AM
front facade starting to come together. the three portals are all slightly different, as they are in real life. honestly really well executed given the scale
May 5, 2025 at 1:46 AM
phase 2 done! looking even more like an exploded axonometric drawing
May 4, 2025 at 8:04 PM
main wall assembly: windows, pilasters, arches
May 4, 2025 at 7:36 PM
ok we’re back
i like the little assembly for the side doors, red being the one pop of color visible on the outside
May 4, 2025 at 7:34 PM
first part done! the set is structured in phases to mimic how Notre Dame was actually built over time. this is roughly how much was built in the year 1182. i'm obviously an enormous sucker for the cross section, look at it!!

time to rest my poor fingers before going on to the next phase lol

and the upper flying buttresses are hollow, which somewhat mimic their real-life functionality as drainage gutters
May 3, 2025 at 7:08 PM
weird part alert: star wars droid arms as the lower flying buttresses! and lots of weird geometry to fill in the curved part of the choir roof
May 3, 2025 at 6:17 PM
floor and columns looking GOOD. the tile pattern is scaled way up from the real one but i love that it's brick-built rather than printed tiles
May 3, 2025 at 4:18 PM
lots of repetition early on, unsurprisingly. tedious to build but plenty of detail at such small scale
May 3, 2025 at 4:14 PM
we are, once again, back

three recent book pickups:

- A FROG IN THE FALL by linnea sterte, an impossibly cool comic (saw it in @nipple.business’s apartment and immediately ordered a copy)

- a cute little catalog of japanese manhole covers

- a nonlinear scrapbook/archive of beehive design throughout human history
