Eight years ago, as Trump took office the first time, I despondently took a risk and walked across the Kīlauea caldera to take this picture on my 52nd birthday. Today on my 60th, I think about that night as I’m working on the Los Angeles Fires Phase I recovery.

It’s time for Los Angeles to go after all the investment companies and off-shore tax cheats who have been manipulating the housing market, and often leaving houses empty. Set limits on the number of residential properties any entity can own, especially corporations.

President Carter’s goal was American energy independence by the year 2000. I think about all the lives and capital lost on wars, climate change and terrorism because we deviated from that path.

Echo Cliffs, south of Lee’s Ferry, AZ. Kaibab Limestone (where I’m standing; Permian ~ 270 mya), Moenkopi Sandstone (cliffs in the foreground; Triassic ~ 240 mya), Chinle Formation (lower part of background cliffs; Triassic ~ 225 mya), and capped by Glen Canyon Group (Jurassic ~ 200-170 mya).
