The big irony is while reading the first paragraph this "Subscribe" pop-up appeared. Popups (GDPR cookie permission requests, various ads and crap) are one of the many annoying things that didn't happen in the 1990s Web. For a rare example where none of this happens now, see Futility Closet.

Many decades ago insurance was for paying for big, unexpected bills like cancer treatment and heart bypass. Now people expect insurance to pay for everything (see meme). Why is this? Also, are these big bills more common because people live longer?
