To these & other Democrats who voted yes to this resolution against the US maintaining a social safety net similar to other advanced countries, I’d say we know your vote is a bet that corporate interests are going to bail you out in the primaries. I don’t think they will. This ain’t the 80s anymore.

New Mexico Congressional Representatives, all Democrats, went with much the rest of the nation’s Dems. Teresa Leger Fernandez @fernandez.house.gov (Dist 3, Santa Fe and North) voted wisely (no). Melanie Stansbury @repstansbury.bsky.social (Dist. 1, Albuquerque, normally my hero) didn’t vote.

Unfortunately, a large number of Democrats went along with the Republicans in voting in favor of this resolution in apparent favor of corporate donors. Rep. Sean Casten of Illinois ( @casten.house.gov ) said it best, “Either they are stupid, or they think that you are.”

Harry Truman’s observation on the socialism that the GOP opposed in 1952, and continues to oppose today as “socialism,” includes public power utilities, Social Security, labor unions, and “anything that helps people.”
