Transcendent joy, elevated through grief. Shades of Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus, which is a strong, strong recommendation.

3. Pixey - Million Dollar Baby

Sunshine and breakbeats. Made for a Glastonbury sunset slot.

4. Public Service Broadcasting - The Last Flight

Takes everything they do best and distills it into one of their most cohesive, song-based albums to date. Pure ear candy.

5. Charli XCX - Brat

Era-defining, in all its forms. The most important pop artist around today.

6. W. H. Lung - Every Inch Of Earth Pulsates

Manchester continues to produce bands capable of classic albums that combine melancholia with life-affirming dance hooks, and W.H. Lung's third is their best yet.

7. Sofia Portanet - Chasing Dreams

Second album from the Neue Deutsche Welle revivalist sees her taking her debut's compelling atmosphere and adding soaring pop hooks. Irresistible.

8. Confidence Man - 3AM (La La La)

The Brisbane party-starters roar back with another unashamed electro-pop riot.

9. Fat Dog - Woof.

If you're not paying attention when you put this on, that won't last long. Grabs you by the lapels and slaps you silly. File next to The KLF and Utah Saints.

10. Peggy Gou - I Hear You

Finally! A long time coming, but well worth the wait. Sublime dance music from the South Korean DJ.
