I’m not here to take myself too seriously. Opinions are my own.

Finished reading: Radicalized: Four Tales of Our Present Moment by Cory Doctorow 📚

These were four short stories. While originally published in 2019, they all feel extremely relevant in 2025.

My favorite was Unauthorized Bread, in which an unlikely hacker […]

"This was, not surprisingly, a controversial matter. During the war, during the congressional debates over the treaty with Spain, and during the heated election of 1900, the question of empire was argued at high volume.

In essence, it was an argument about a trilemma. Republicanism, white […]

Balloons Puff and Twist into an Elaborate Inflatable Ensemble by Masayoshi Matsumoto — Colossal

Stunning balloon animals. https://www.thisiscolossal.com/2022/11/masayoshi-matsumoto-balloon-animals/
All images © Masayoshi Matsumoto, shared with permission # Balloons Puff and Twist into an Elaborate Inflatable Ensemble by Masayoshi Matsumoto November 7, 2022 Art Grace Ebert * Share * Pin * Email __Bookmark Armed with colorful balloons and plenty of air, Masayoshi Matsumoto (previously) twists and ties a playfully quirky menagerie of inflatable creatures. A chemical engineer by day, the artist spends his off hours stretching the malleable material into a sticky-fingered tree frog or plump squirrel, elevating the creations typically associated with children’s birthday parties or carnivals into elaborate sculptural works. Matsumoto is loyal to the bendable material and forgoes paints, glues, and other fasteners, and many of the animals accentuate the shape of the balloons themselves: deflated tips resemble claws and puffed oblongs hang like shaggy fur or splay upward like a rooster’s crest. Find more of the latex animals on the artist’s Instagram and Tumblr, and head to YouTube for tutorials on creating your own characters, as well. **Do stories and artists like this matter to you?** Become a Colossal Member now, and support independent arts publishing. * Hide advertising * Save your favorite articles * Get 15% off in the Colossal Shop * Receive members-only newsletter * Give 1% for art supplies in K-12 classrooms ### Join us today! $7/month $75/year Explore membership options Previous article Next article

Amazing reporting on forced demolitions in Samarkand from Katie Putz in the Diplomat. I hope someone picks up the corruption angle, but I understand how dangerous that is, particularly for the sources inside. The tie between construction and corruption is frequent […]

@LeilaSeiitbek is such a hero, and it’s so tragic to see the way the world is treating its refugees. The world needs many more people like her.

Tapestry by @Iconfactory is one of my favorite ways to consume socal media, but it really needs a better way for power users to manage many feeds into timelines. I’m hoping the upcoming Mac app will solve this problem.
