This Christmas season, don’t forget to buy from indie Bookstores AND buy directly from indie author’s websites.

Shopping at indie bookstores matters, but you may not realize how few of them stock any indie books. So if you care about those authors, you need to ALSO buy directly from authors.

“My background is in journalism, and editing in that field is all about correction: cutting what isn’t needed, fixing what is needed but doesn’t work. I entered into the developmental editing process thinking that’s what it was going to be like. But what I learned while working with Cee is that a good editor isn’t just trying to point out all your mistakes. A good editor begins with the question, “What are your goals with this book?”, and then works with you to help you achieve those specific goals. When Cee and I first connected, I explained to her that I wanted to use Frostbitten to introduce a world in which I could tell more stories. So when I got her edits back, every suggestion and comment she made was from the perspective of, “You are trying to do this, and I don’t think it’s coming across how YOU want it to.” If a piece of worldbuilding was important to me, even if it wasn’t absolutely crucial to the book, Cee didn’t tell me to cut it. She helped me find a way to weave it in so that it worked for the book. It was not only a process that helped me take huge leaps towards writing the book that I wanted to write, but it’s one that taught me the importance of knowing what your goals are with your writing. Not every story is trying to do the same thing. Some writers want to kick off a twelve-book edit. Some writers want to write the most commercially viable book for the market and sell as many copies as possible. Some writers just want to find an agent. An editor like Cee starts with understanding what you want to achieve, and helping you tell the best story possible that will help you get there.
