In personal experience; it's the norm to say "guys" for a group of friends or people you regularly engage with (typo of that in first post, sorry).

I've never been criticised for saying "guys" in this term however people from different countries may see it as "hey men/males!"

Its the informal version of "ladies and gentlemen!"

And we use "man" for "human" in terms of; "mankind" "man-made" , "man-eating"

Traditionally human is "man" so that's where "guys" come from in a distant sense.

Definitely a gender neutral term!

"Guys! Look at this!"
