In Cumulus City, one of Jørn's 5 floating megalopolises, there's a section called the Twilight. Natural sunlight never reaches that far down in the city, and you can't see the sky. It's an older part of the city where a lot of shady things go down. Including street racing.

An excerpt from Hero (The Hero Rebellion 1). The taxi descended deeper into the Twilight, past old holoboards through thinning streams of traffic, to where the lights weren't as bright and the hovers not as new. 'That should do it,' Hero said as she entered one last command on her bracer's holoscreen. Across from her, Norah concentrated on her own holoscreen. With a deft movement of her fingers, she spun it around to face Hero. 'I have you: location, vital stats and encrypted comms. You?' She nodded. 'Same.' The orange veins of energy that ran under the bracer's surface dimmed to a soft blue-white glow as she powered it down. Imogen's smile was stuck in her mind: the way her lips had curved just so and how she'd looked at Hero like she could see right through her skull. She rubbed her hand over the bracer before zipping the left sleeve of her coat, hiding it. That smile still made her nervous.

Nai stilled, stopped in the midst of the fight, the violence, and watched. The white one spun and twisted around her, small feet leaving twining trails in the shallow snow, while the others darted and lunged, long blades seeking not the figure in white, but Nai; her heart, her legs, her neck. But the white one was always there, never a moment late, never a moment early, always just in time, and on her face the serenity that always clung to her – for the white one was Qien Dao, not as girlish in this guise, with a fan in her hand, an arc of paper and steel. Maybe a little fear though. No, Nai corrected herself as another blade came at her side—the pointed star bright, singing with the ferocity of the one holding it, the anger in their eyes—and there was Qien Dao, fan sweeping under and up, deflecting the blade even as she threw the attacker off. Not a little fear. A lot of fear, struggling to rise through the maid's blue eyes, drawing the flush from her cheeks. It was in the pulse pounding behind her ear, the sweat shimmering on her forehead, the white creeping through the determination in her gaze. A well-hidden fear. Nai wondered if the others saw it, or if all they saw was Nai and the blood on her robes, the corpse in the grove behind. Perhaps. She did not care much.

Q4: What adaptation would you recommend to someone new to C/K/J-dramas?

Hard one but... probably Eternal Love. The original novel (To the Sky Kingdom) has an English translation and is just 1 book.

I'm watching Melody of Golden Age again. Historical detective dramas with female detectives are my catnip, but I'm also rediscovering how awesome the other female power players are, the Dowager Empress in particular.

Here's a snippet from Hero. I love this introduction to the Lamb, it sets up their relationship so well. Also, Tybalt will forever be one of my fave substitute parents.

‘Hero.’ The Lamb, the latest in her bevy of minders, stood in her peripheral vision clutching a heavy coat, the wind flattening her white-blonde curls against her head. Her mouth was pulled tight and her big green eyes were wide, almost swallowing her face. The way she eyed Fink looked to Hero as if she were waiting for him to flash his fangs and pounce. She held herself like one of the Old Terra creatures Hero had named her for, stiff and tense, leaning away from the ‘pard as if the extra millimetre would save her if he did. A brave lamb, wary but not scared. Hero wondered at where Tybalt – butler, tutor, substitute parent – had found someone who didn’t quake before six-hundred kilograms of genetically engineered ruc-pard, bigger at the shoulder than Hero was tall, and twice as long. This woman wouldn’t be as easy to get rid of as the others.

I have been working on "upgrading" the covers for The Hero Rebellion, in prep for the upcoming 10th anniversary Nexus Edition hardcover launching this November.

I'm not afraid to say that book 2 (Riven) has been kicking my arse, but I THINK I have it nailed. Finally.

Honestly? I just started watching Echoes of Self and I love the FL as Empress in the first episode. In the 10mins she reigns, she kicks butt and takes names. My kind of woman.

Ooo... This one from Pariah: The Hero War 1 (follow-up series to The Hero Rebellion)... I both loved and hated it.

Coming back to a world several years (and a couple of unrelated books) AFTER I finished the first one was hard and exciting at the same time.

Pariah is still a #WIP.

Excerpt from Pariah: The Hero War 1. She crouched on the deck, giant cargo containers rising either side of her, and watched as the past came closer and closer on the horizon. The freight train rushed through the sky, the front of it—two kilometres ahead—already turning to slip under the sky city. Clouds and mountains passed underneath, only the thin lip of the deck and the clear plasglas envirosheilds separating her from a thirty-six thousand-metre plummet. The wind whistled through the gaps in the envirosheilds, the cold turning it into a knife, tearing through the short, ragged ends of her brown hair and chilling the exposed flesh of face and hands. She tucked her fingers under her armpits. The heavy nano-leather of her cargo pants and the high collar of her jacket protected the rest of her, the thin black [nanoskin] underneath automatically pushing out a little more heat as the outside temperature dropped. She should be back in her bedroll, catching what sleep she could, but Hero didn't want to miss a second of this, couldn't miss it.
