So yes, autonomy is important, but it's much less important imo than learning and mastering a set series of basic tools and skills, which requires directive and authoritative feedback and training.

It seems like cybernetics. It's not necessarily true that trees need wind, but probably true they develop differently in environments with varying wind. Organism adapting to fit their environment. But, adaptation to stress in humans will have varying outputs, good or bad. Biology is complex.

Elem./Primary Schools: where students are across-the-board novices, parents need sig. support, and teachers first form and guide group social interactions, are mandated to monitor care gaps, and teach multiple foundational topics to mastery, daily. Absurd. See point 2 below. Give them their fish.

What can the science of learning do for teachers? It can help us overcome biases: how we *think* we learn and how we *actually* learn are often very different. This also applies to instruction: the approaches which might appear to work in the short term often do not lead to long term gains.

When we talk about the science of learning, we're talking about a subset of interrelated fields involving neuroscience, cognitive science and education psychology. Mayer's distinction between the 3 elements of learning, instruction and assessment in "educationally relevant settings" are very helpful
