My revised list of core beliefs about myself for 2024 Based on empirical evidence of how vou and most others have treated me every time I needed help and support since May 2023: 1. I am unloveable 2. At the end of the day, Trump is still President. Republicans are still in charge of the executive and both houses of Congress. The conservative-dominated Supreme Court still seems to view with a tolerant eye the administration's many instances of executive overreach. There is no sign of anyone in the administration planning to recalibrate their approach in response to the protests. In fact, on October 19 Trump told Fox News Anchor Maria Bartirimo that he would invoke the Insurrection Act and tap into "unquestioned power," if Democrats continued to push back on his use of the National Guard to fight crime and his use of ICE and Border Patrol agents to deport illegal immigrants. Finally, there is one aspect of this struggle which is unique to America. All the other examples of successful resistance movements cited above were helped by support from democracies outside, none more so than the United States itself. For decades, the United States has supported pro-democracy activists around the world by offering them political support, financial aid, and strategic advice, and using a mix of carrots and sticks to try to compel authoritarian regimes not to clamp down too brutally, and open up more democratic space. There is no such assistance coming from the outside world for Americans. If American democracy fails, democracy movements around the world will also collapse. So, we all have a stake in this fight. But this is a fight which Americans are having to face alone. In South Korea in 2024, President Yoon Suk Yeol's effort to impose martial law failed because parts of the civil service, legislature and military, including members of his own political party, refused to support it. In the US, protests against the Trump administration's behaviour are unlikely to succeed as long as so many of its elite structures, such as universities, businesses, law firms, and members of his political party, choose to go along with it, for opportunistic reasons of their own. Where America's elites have failed, ordinary Americans need to increase pressure on them through product boycotts, or name and shame campaigns, along the lines of the successful #Tesla Takedown movement, which eventually compelled Elon Musk to quite his role as head of DOGE. Likewise, the NoKings protests need to focus on a single message - the challenge Trump's administration poses to American democracy itself. The protests also need to become broader based and take place more frequently, to sustain momentum. In the republic of Georgia, protesters have taken to the streets daily since flawed elections in November 2024, for almost 330 days now. They have refused to give up or back down, despite facing brutal government tactics such as tear gassing, water cannons, beatings, arrests and imprisonment of multiple attendees on trumped-up charges. Americans need to display the same resilience and determination, and be prepared for the long haul.

Fellow adopted people who, like me, have found it increasingly difficult in recent years to break through public opinion with our real life experiences and voices on adoption issues, we have the Family Research Council’s comprehensive messaging strategy to thank for that.
One assumption lies behind these recommendations: Everyone's perception of adoption must be changed. That negative impressions of adoption are so readily conveyed and accepted confirms that adoption has yet to take firm hold as a positive value within American culture, let alone among pregnancy resource centers. Adoption must be repositioned accurately so that it is no longer perceived as an unbearable loss and shameful action for a mother or an irreparable injury to the child. The language of adoption itself must change. Adoption is a choice made by a courageous and loving mother to provide her child with the best life she can. It is an heroic act of selflessness that may serve to redeem her character and lay the groundwork for a better future for her as well. The result for the baby is a home with a family that is strong and secure. Adoption creates a family, and the individual to whom chief gratitude is due is the woman who gave that baby life in abundance. Images promoting adoption typically focus on the children and adoptive couples. Birthmothers are rarely portrayed positively. That must change. Pregnancy resource centers need to present these heroic women in terms that evoke admiration, honor, and respect. Communication strategies must define for young women the meaning of maturity, adulthood, and womanhood. Advertising should present the voices of women who have walked through a crisis pregnancy and have chosen adoption. These voices will be particularly important since women typically are unable to get counseling from other women who have experienced an unexpected pregnancy. An advertising campaign can present an opportunity for emotionally compelling storytelling. The campaign should include stories of women who chose adoption as well as stories about the fulfilling experiences of adoptive parents. Focusing on adopted children- on their gratitude, success, and happiness in life- is very important. As important as influencing adults is on this matter, influencing children must be the highest priority. First impressions of adoption tend to last a lifetime. To be effective, any public-relations effort must encompass programming and media that are child-friendly. A consistent, national message directed toward the next generation could help permanently change the value this culture places on adoption.
