No one has devastated me like the church. No one has absolutely crushed me like pastors. Don’t be these people. Our kids need better.

But there is a freedom to this life on the other side. I don’t know what the future of my spiritual life will be, but I’m finally starting to see some glimmers that it’s still alive, if very broken.

I feel so seen. I was so behind in math by the time I got to college, but after a few classes with a great professor, his recommendation was that I had a mind for mathematics and I should major in it (I didn’t). I had no idea I was good at math because I was on my own with these stupid textbooks.

I do both in equal turn.

We all form our worldviews from deeply personal places. Dr. Hall taught me to listen before I leapt to judgment, a lesson I’m remembering today, over 20 years later. Happy International Women’s Day. Grateful for wise women like her.

Her office was always crammed with kids, overflowing into the hall. There I’d debate my classmates on abortion, etc, and be confronted with stories of pain I’d never, ever have been exposed to had she not created such a wildly beautiful space for all of us. I, my heart, learned so much.

I started my current job right after lockdown in 2020 and it was so ridiculously hard. It caught me off guard. It took me a year to get my feet under me, but I did and everything worked out just fine in the long run. You’re going to be great, give yourself a minute!
