Maybe he's just, you know, happy

If you're a 30 plus year old man then commenting on this topic would be kinda weird too.

This one you can actually walk for once!

To be fair, he's an 83 year old man so his views aren't entirely surprising.

Perhaps the Guardian should update his profile picture in the interests of transparency and journalistic integrity.

Never forget that Simon Jenkins is usually wrong.

Keep hitting 'mute' on the content you don't want to see and it should help.

And please stop posting the word 'Arsenal' as you're appearing in my Arsenal feed (I haven't muted you though!)
July 12, 2025 at 1:10 PM
He's talking about the few thousand people who signed the petition.
If you didn't, this isn't about you or any of the other millions of online fans who didn't.

Besides, a handful of people & bots signing a petition against a privately owned company is clearly ridiculous. What's their leverage?
July 11, 2025 at 8:17 PM
But if you read it again you'll see that he isn't saying what you are saying.
"These people signing petitions aren't Arsenal fans. They live in some parallel fantasy universe on social media where football is viewed like a video game."
July 11, 2025 at 8:05 PM
To me, it's a question of numbers:
Obviously the 60,000 fans in the stadium have a higher ratio of passionate, knowledgeable etc. fans than the millions of online fans.
There are many passionate, knowledgeable fans online only but they are diluted and distorted by the bots, trolls and fools.

On or offline, anyone stridently claiming they know more than the people whose job it is to make these decisions is either delusional, angry or seeking attention.
The wise person would wait until a young player has had at least a season before they rage at the club.
Less clicks in that though.

Expect a huge, fuck-you-plastics roar from the crowd when he steps on that pitch
July 11, 2025 at 5:24 PM
Twitter is the rage room of social media - except they leave more angry than when they entered.
It doesn't take much to make the bad and bots lose their shit there.
July 11, 2025 at 5:17 PM
I agree. But I'm not sure I've seen many fans getting angry.

I've heard about them but I'm not convinced they really exist as fans: trolls, kids, the clueless probably but not fans.
July 11, 2025 at 4:40 PM
I'm sorry to say it, Scott, but social media clearly isn't for you.
Please take this 'calmness' somewhere where it doesn't disappoint the users so we can all carry on with impatience and hysteria.

Yup even Google knows it's AFC Bournemouth.

People running around waving pitchforks is why we have a legal system because, you know, the legal system gets it wrong less often than the people with pitchforks.

They get to decide if they believe him or not, not you.

Also, a world where "innocent until proven guilty" stops being a thing is a scary world. Even with the ones who are probably very guilty.

And, no, the people who believe in this are not "friends" of the accused or enemies of the people.
July 5, 2025 at 8:56 AM
If your friend insists he's innocent, you should stand by him until proven guilty.

If you never really liked him & it all confirms some suspicions & dodgy behaviour you've seen, you can shun.

Either way, it's their decision given they're closer to him and will have info we don't.

There're 2 complex negotiations per signing: personal + club. So many things can go wrong.

If it fails (their agent is playing you, another club comes in or you can't agree terms) pivoting quickly from Sesko to Gyok (or choices 3-6) is easy.

Otherwise, you end up with Sterling on deadline day!
June 25, 2025 at 12:49 PM
I, perhaps optimistically, see it as them advancing all of potential interest simultaneously until the preferred is signed: an anti 'eggs in one basket' strategy. Can help negotiating a better fee and allows a rapid pivot if the first choice doesn't pan out.
June 25, 2025 at 9:31 AM
Maybe it's just the heat of argument but telling someone how they have to behave to be a "real fan" is probably not the killer comment you thought it was.
