Coco will make Aryna a better player if she accepts that Coco DEFEATS her.
But Coco still isn't even close to her ceiling so....she just might outpace the improvements.

a bit turning point in the sabalenka/swiatek rivalry was aryna finally accepting iga's qualities as a player. after her losses to iga during her streak in 2022, aryna sounded a lot like how she sounded today.

a few weeks later, she beat sabalenka in straights en route to the WTA Finals title.
now she's 6-5 vs. sabalenka.
this is a matchup that doesn't bother her. it's not in her head. but, given how the USO and RG Fs played out, it might just be in Sabs'. you don't just voluntarily chunk 70UFEs.

last fall when nobody was watching, coco gauff hit an absurd 21 DFs (most on tour by anyone that year if i recall right) and lost 6-4 in the third to aryna sabalenka in the wuhan SFs. i thought she'd be super devo after and she wasn't at all. b/c she believed she would have won but for the DFs.

i always look askance at people who doubt that kid's quality. absolute stud of a player and a person. and she has a consistent track record of shutting up the yappers.
