Beige Oak
@beigeoak.bsky.social
Retired art conservator, active gardener, artist, vegan. I’m here on Bluesky for following news and humor. And food ideas. And birds, love birds. And dogs. Trees and native plants. Ok, lots of things.
It's not easy to get there. From the US you have to go into Canada, go west, then south back into the US, through customs inspections twice, each way (4x total.) Canadians only have to go through it once each way, but still... makes sense for the museum to be anywhere else.

The last of the cottonwood leaves still clinging to the tip of the otherwise bare tree. Abscission not yet complete.

Baby greens made it through a week of cold weather under the row cover. Heading into a week of mildness so I took the blanket off and watered them, covering with chicken wire to keep the critters away - knock on wood. #garden #gardening

You mean "Pope Yes"? That's what the font says.

First bonsai I've ever found growing in the street, having withstood traffic, streetsweeping machines, summer heat and drought, snow and ice, for who knows how long... and still she persists.

Yes, Blue Sky, this is (also) about you.

I wish I had the right place for one of these Japanese maples but I don't. My neighbor does, though, and it's always so beautiful in the fall on a clear blue sky day. Hope you enjoy it too. #photography

Winter greens are up and running! Going to be warm this week so no row cover, but it'll go back on when it gets cold again. For now it'll just have chicken wire to keep the groundhog from chomping it down to nothing. #garden #gardening

It's true. Be a good parent. You know who you are.

The little princess helped herself to some candy, with a loud and grateful "Thank You" after taking each one (took 6 or 7, which is fine, there were still some left this morning). They were all delighted at being able to take what they wanted. #Halloween

What an awesome stem on this butternut squash. This is what you can have when you grow your own. Not handled much, just gently snipped from the vine and set onto a table for a month or so to finish ripening. Stem looks like a bronze sculpture. Handsome fruit. #garden #gardening

Purple cabbage sauerkraut with carrots and celery and onions and dill. Crunchy and tasty.

It's available on Roku streaming. I read the book a few months ago so now I'll be watching this soon - glad you mentioned it.

Vegan pumpkin pie, using tapioca flour instead of eggs for a thickener. Freshly ground nutmeg and vanilla are the secret ingredients, shhh don't tell anyone.

My favorite red fruits - pomegranate and red Bartlett pears.

Watercress seeds sprouted. Theoretically they like cool temps, so the back windows should provide that esp overnight. Not sure if the reflective morning light or bowl/spray of humidity will be suitable, but I'll find out. #garden

Poultry is a source of UTIs. The same strains found in grocers as humans with UTI. Mostly women. My question: is it spread via consumption or food-handling techniques (cutting boards, towels, etc)? #vegan. journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...

A late aster blooming alongside a boardwalk through a swamp.

Palest of blue
but still a standout
among green leaves
in a sea of browned forbs.

Good morning - please enjoy this backlit beauty of red and yellow dogwood leaves, with blue sky and green trees in the background. Reminds me of a stained glass window.

This has a suspiciously interesting series of notches or short spines along its upper left edge, could it be somebody poorly hiding under the sand?

If you zoom in on my photo you can see the little "tassels" on the pointy end.

Made pumpkin cornbread today and might have used "too much" vanilla extract and the whole house smells like a European bakery now! (is there even such a thing as too much vanilla?)

Changed my avatar. Still an oak, but this one's a white oak, and my own, planted a few years ago and growing fast. Most of the leaves hang on over winter and don't fall until spring when the new ones push their way out. Fall in spring!

Now the bumblebees are sleeping overnight under the lavender blossoms instead of the goldenrod that have turned brown. Notice its head isn't in the flower; its legs are locked and it's just hanging there, silent and still.
