Ra charged Sekhmet to enact a terrible punishment on his mortal subjects for rebelling against him. Sekhmets vengeance was so fierce the Nile turned red from the blood. Ra pacified his daughter by turning her from the angry lioness into the gentle feline Bastet.- Source: The Little Book of Goddesses

Later protrayals of Bastet show her with a cat's head, or as a cat, with several kittens -her servants- at her feet. However, early depictions show her with the head of a lioness or as the lion goddess Sekhmet.

Early myths tell of Bastet fighting the chaos snake Apep, who would challenge Bastet's father, the great sun god Ra. Sometimes Apep would swallow Ra and bring on an eclipse. One night, Bastet, in her cat form, slew the snake and freed Ra, the sun.

Bastet is the goddess of the home and domesticity, fertility and childbirth, joy and celebration, and the protector of cats (which were highly valued in Ancient Egypt). She also safeguards homes from evil spirits and misfortune, particularly protecting women and children. And cats. 😉
