How does Russia fix its exchange rate? Are they selling other currencies and buying roubles to keep it higher than it otherwise would be? That doesn't seem super sustainable.

Who is negotiating with whom? Is the Israel Supreme Court, or whichever court is relevant here, a party to negotiations? If so, that's unbelievably weird.

I enjoy the use of the word 'catching'. Somehow more optimistic than 'chasing', and yet it undercuts itself by emphasising that the suspect has not, as of the time of writing, actually been caught.

But the vast majority of US states impose statewide sales taxes, so... why shouldn't EU countries have VATs?

Oh, do you know why it was NZ and Australia? I kind of assumed that our distance from everywhere meant we weren't likely to be able to offer much.

Do you think that it has to be the F-35 based on the threats Europe is likely to face, i.e Russia? Would a not-quite state-of-the-art fighter be enough until the 2040s?

Absolutely, kick the can down the road and hope for a miracle seems to be the idea. I think it's easy to forget that Putin never expected or wanted this big confrontation with the West. Other than Trump's reelection, none of the last 3 years went according to plan for Russia.

This is sad and very worrying, but I also enjoy that this deeply stupid attitude about Canada is exactly the same as Putin's with regard to Ukraine.

I think a lot of them really don't, they just don't seem to be able to intellectually take the step of realising that 'just pacificism harder' is not a viable strategy, despite *so* much evidence to the contrary.

You'd think the Russian govt would be against this, as it's militarily totally useless, but produces wives and families that need to be compensated. The pointless evil is pretty much on-brand though.

I wondered at the time, since I work in healthcare, what the effects of the loss of the Zivildienstler would be and whether the savings in the military sector would make up for costs incurred by loss of cheap labour in the healthcare sector.

We are so, *so* far away from having a strategic culture that could responsibly own a nuclear arsenal. Maybe we might have it in 10 years, but definitely not now.
