I've been waiting for Act 3 for so long I forgot I was waiting for it

I can confidently say that ear pads are temporary, but good sound is less temporary. I think it's worth it to replace the ear cups so long as you like the headphones. At most you'll spend about 25 bucks for new ear pads, but equivalent headphones with new pads will cost way more than 25 bucks.
