In passing, you might mistake **_Beer Planet_** for one of those beer shops aimed at tourists, mostly selling bog standard beers and weird glasses… However, you couldn’t be further from the truth. Once you enter the shop, see the shelves full of—mostly very local—craft beers, and meet the Latino owners, their love for beer becomes blatantly clear! * * * _Beer Planet_ was the idea of Diego from Venezuela, and Francisco “Pacho” from Colombia, who met after arriving in Brussels, and found shared passion for Belgian beer. Together with their wives Mathilde and Pamela, they turned this idea into a reality, and a little over a year ago they opened this beer shop in the hearth of the Marolles. The shop is well stocked with beers from all the Brussels breweries we love, but also some beers we hadn’t seen yet adorned the shelves. As it turned out, there’s not just a shop, but there’s also a _Beer Planet Brewing Co._ that brews their own beers! Well, they have a 20 liter installation to experiment with, but the bigger batches are actually brewed at _Brewery De Meester_. Grab a cold one from the fridge, to find out how they did! ### Cosy So yes, while most beers are just kept on shelves, and will have to be cooled down before consumption, there is a big standing fridge with cold beers to drink straight away as well. No need to rush home, or drink them in the street: there’s a cosy couch and a table hidden in the back, along with some reading material and games. If you feel lucky—or actually skilled—you can throw a dart at the board behind the till to try and win a free beer. **© Hannah Casier** | La Bagarre The cooperative brewery _CoHop_ has a nice taproom, where beers of all the participating breweries are served. However, the student area of Etterbeek isn’t exactly craft beer central… So, one of the five _CoHop_ breweries opened their own taproom in Saint-Gilles, a bit closer to the action this time: **_La Bagarre_**. * * * If you’ve been to _CoHop_ in the past our read our blog post about it, _La Bagarre_ might not immediately ring a bell… That is because recently, they brewed under the name _DrinkThatBeer_. This was actually still the case when we visited the bar, although going through our photos, that old name wasn’t even used anymore on anything apart from the cans in the fridge! So they have a new name, but still brew the same beers, still at CoHop. Ten of their beers are available on draught in the bars, in 25cl, 44cl, and—the rather peculiar size—1,3 liter. In the fridge you’ll find some more of their beers, and some from their _CoHop_ colleagues as well. That 1,3 liter pitcher might come in handy to share with your table during one of the many events _La Bagarre_ organises, like quizzes, game nights, and karaoke. ### Poulycroc On the food menu you’ll find usual cheeses and artisanal dry sausages, but also some dished made in house, like cauliflower wings, and even the Belgo-Dutch chip shop staple _poulycroc_ , a breaded and deep-fried chicken meat rod! _La Bagarre_ also serves some seasonal specials, like the grilled cheese toasts during our visit. There’s special attention for the vegans on the menu: dishes are clearly marked as such, or in some cases the option to have it changed to a vegan version is available. **© Hannah Casier** | Bar Bibine The _Galerie Bortier_ , where not so long ago one would only find old books, now also is the home of **Bar Bibine** , proudly pouring beers from eight Brussels breweries: _La Mule_ , _L’Ermitage_ , _En Stoemelings_ , _La Senne_ , _Brussels Beer Project_ , _Surréaliste_ , and _La Jungle_. * * * _Bar Bibine_ is actually is just ‘a bar’, or more specifically, a bar counter on one side of the nineteenth century _Galerie Bortier_ , with some tables in the middle of the arcade, under the glass canopy, and a couple of booths on the opposite side. However, _Bar Bibine_ —or is it _Bar à Bibine_?—is just one of the many businesses in the gallery. Yes, there are still some second-hand book dealers, but while a beer and a book go well together, after a couple of glasses, one of the food outlets in the gallery might be more appealing. So while the bar itself doesn’t serve any food, there’s plenty of choice at the neighbours: Indian food at _Naanry_ , seafood at _Polpo_ , cheese at _Sélections_ , Italian food at _Gazzosa_ , middle-eastern dishes at _Mezzeway_ , and meaty delights at _Dierendonck_. ### #TrainBeer The beer menu of _Bar Bibine_ lists at least two beers for each of those Brussels breweries, in servings of 25 cl and of 50 cl. While there also is a column prominently displayed which mentions 33 cl, it is for the (same) beers indeed, but in can or bottle, to take away. **© Hannah Casier** | Kastar Our visit to _**Kastar**_ was slightly overdue, but only because the last time we tried to visit it, it was closed while according to the information we found, it should have been open… We’re glad we gave it a second try though, because what we found was a stunning interior, and a very attractive selection of beers! * * * The defining feature of _Kastar_ definitely is the translucent vaulted ceiling behind the bar. We like to sit at the bar in most cases anyway, but an architectural peculiarity like this makes that seating choice a no-brainer! The interior is younger than it looks though: it is mostly made with recycled local glass, marble, and woodwork. But since we were there to drink, our attention quickly went to the chalkboard menu—still the best kind—to see the beers on offer. Of the eight beers on draught, five were by _AB InBev_ or _Moortgat_ , but the remaining three were by _De la Senne_ and _Surréaliste_! The bottle and can list was even better, with more beers by the aforementioned locals, but also some by _L’Ermitage_ , _Cantillon_ , and _Vandekelder_. There were also some bottles by _En Stoemelings_ , but since they went out of business, _Kastar_ might have run out of those by now… ### Cocktails & Croques Your non-beer-drinking drinking buddies will find a nice selection of cocktails on the menu as well, next to bubbles, wines, shots, and a home-made ice-tea. To eat, there were _croque monsieurs_ available. We didn’t try them ourselves, but we saw one pass by when another customer ordered one, and it looked nice enough! While the sun’s out, we should definitely mention they have a street side terrace as well. Even though the entrance is not facing the street, it definitely falls in the street food category. The decor of this hole in the wall is reminiscent of the little restaurants you would find in a Korean street.</p> <p>The menu is simple, and kind of like a flow chart: choose your dish—a bucket of <em>Bukchon</em> bites, a <em>Buson</em> bowl which includes rice, or a <em>Seoul Special</em> to include some kimchi as well—wether you want chicken or the vegetarian cauliflower option, the size, and then of course the sauce: honey garlic, sweet spicy <em>gochujang</em>, <em>sriracha</em> mayo, or blueberry (!) BBQ. What piqued our interest however, were the bottles of <em>Horang-i</em>. This is a dry-hopped rice lager especially brewed for <em>Seoul South Station</em> by <em><a href="https://www.tipsytribe.be">Tipsy Tribe Brewery &amp; Distillery</a></em>, a brewery in Koekelberg.
