i think therapy as a psuedo-deific force in the more modern generations worldview is really exemplied in like. how people will say to you "youre a freak, go to therapy" and when you say "actually ive talked to my therapist abt this and theyve told me its a good way to process my issues" and they respond "well youre therapist is feeding into your mental illness and needs to have thier license revoked thats not real therapy." and it becomes very clear they are not thinking of the material realities of therapy as a interaction and dynamic, and more of Therapy as a nebulous "make you normal" genie.

Parent emotionally dumps on child about marriage, sex life, or other inappropriate topics. Parent guilts (directly or indirectly) regularly. Friends, family, & even strangers comment on how "mature" child is. Parent comments on body, what to wear, or how to wear it. Parent teaches co-dependence by not encouraging the independence of adult child. Parent intervenes in personal relationships guides on who to date & friendships.

The Enmeshed Family System Family relationships characterized by weak boundaries, lack of emotional separation, and intrusive demands for support or attention that prevent family members from developing a strong and independent sense of self. Common Signs of Enmeshment In Families: Lack of boundaries around privacy. Trying to control and/or overfocusing on how your family might appear to others. Parental over-involvement in relationships. Your mood revolves around a family member's emotional state. Feelings of guilt or disloyalty when saying "no" to a family member. Putting yourself first feels like you are betraying your family. Signs of Family Enmeshment: Lack of boundaries. A dynamic of over-involvement that makes family members feel "close". Individuality or a desire for independence seen as a betrayal. When one member is emotionally reactive all members become reactive. Lack of privacy. A desire to fix or save family members. A belief that you're responsible for the emotional states of others. Enmeshment Parentification: You exist only to care for other people. Criticism: You are never good enough. Possessiveness: You must base your decisions on what makes me feel good. Helplessness: You can't take care of yourself. Unpredictability: You are at the whim of my emotions and impulses. Rescuing: You are entitled to special treatment Healthy Boundaries Self-Care: I receive care from other people and care for myself. Self-Worth: I am good enough. I like who I am. Autonomy: I make independent decisions and think for myself. Advocacy: I ask for what I need. Trust: I regulate my emotions and take responsibility for my behaviors. Collaboration: I do my own work and appreciate the help of others.
