Yeah I remember looking at another autistic kid in middle school and wishing I was diagnosed because then people would pity me and there'd be *justifications* for my weirdness.
Also a couple of popular kids tried to gaslight me and another girl into thinking we liked each other so... yeah.

My thoughts on this are two fold. If you see it as "10, but odd" (like odd), I would think something like 5 or 25. If it's 10, but something's a bit off, perhaps something like 12, as the post suggests (because base 12).

Just warning you that "Aunt Beatrice" means a very different thing to a certain subset of trans women here, and you might get some cross-pollination of a very odd kind coming your way.

Could easily intersperse the flashbacks in-between. There's a lot of 'dead space' that can be filled in the first few chapters of Dorley, before Stef is introduced, and in those 'quiet moments', Stef could reflect on it. Depending on narrative style, Stef could narrate how they got there.
