“I’m an American citizen,” Gavidia told the agent at least three times. Despite his responses, the agent pushed him into a metal gate, put his hands behind his back and asked him what hospital he was born in, Gavidia said. Gavidia, rattled, couldn’t remember the hospital. Video taken by Gavidia’s friend shows two agents holding Gavidia against a blue fence, as he tells them they are twisting his arm. “I’m American, bro!” Gavidia said in the video. “What hospital were you born?” the agent is heard asking in the video. “I don’t know dawg!” he said. “East L.A. bro! I can show you: I have my f—ing Real ID, guey.” Gavidia said he gave the Border Patrol agent his Real ID, but the agent never returned it to him. The agent also took his phone and kept it for 20 minutes, he said, before finally returning it. Even after the agent saw his ID, Gavidia said, he never apologized. “He violated my rights as an American citizen,” Gavidia said, his voice shaking with anger as he spoke over the phone from his business Friday. “It was the worst experience I ever felt. I felt honestly like I was going to die. He literally racked a chamber in his AR-15.” Gavidia, whose clothes were dirty from work, said he figured that’s partly why agents questioned him. “I’m legal,” he said. “I speak perfect English. I also speak perfect Spanish. I’m bilingual, but that doesn’t mean that I have to be picked out, like ‘This guys seems Latino; this guy seems a little bit dirty.’ I’m working, guys. I’m an American. We work. I’m Latino. We work. He added: “It’s just scary, walking while brown, walking while dirty, coming home from work, there’s a high chance you might get picked up.” Gavidia said he still doesn’t have his Real ID back. He went to the Department of Motor Vehicles Friday morning and said immigration agents had stolen his ID. He said he was told he would need to reapply for another one. “He took my ticket to freedom,” Gavidia said. He didn’t sleep Thursday night, fearing the agent would come to his home and take him. Gavidia said his friend, Javier Ramirez, is an American citizen and was also thrown to the ground and arrested. He said he has no idea where Ramirez is.

Saying it will be ok is letting yourself off the hook. It is also deeply naive. By confronting the fact that it very well may not be ok, you are better mentally equipping yourself for a fight. By not saying it will be ok, you are allowing the gravity of this moment to fully sink it. Nothing about this is ok, and there’s nothing to indicate it will be. Saying so is honest. Right wing personalities are always telling their followers to “wake up!” to the truth, but now it seems Democrats should’ve been the ones heeding the urge. We needed to wake up to the fact that we are surrounded by people who think all of this is good—who hate women, who hate immigrants, who hate trans people, who hate education. Or at its most benign, people who simply do not care about what happens to foundational pieces of our society either because they’re insulated by privilege or because their media diet has fed them lies about what happens when they crumble. The answer, however, isn’t to match their hate: It’s to match the unwavering certitude with which they express their beliefs.

Netanyahu did not issue a warning to the Lebanese out of sincere concern. The purpose of the statement was to manufacture justification to an English-speaking audience. Swap out "Hamas" for "Hezbollah," and the rhetoric is identical: Evil is hiding everywhere, therefore Israel claims uninhibited freedom to attack indiscriminately. Anyone who is killed has only themselves to blame. We warned them. Does Israel really think the Western world is so credulous as to accept such a strategy without scrutiny? The answer, emphatically, is yes. And why wouldn't it? There's been no pushback so far. It beggars belief that anyone would buy this line, let alone a second time, but "belief" isn't the issue here. Even if a majority of Americans want an end to the violence, U.S. policy encourages it. Israel's attack on Lebanon only motivated a lame-duck president to send an undetermined number of troops to the Middle East.

In the past decade, at least 163 California police agencies have executed clean-record agreements concealing misconduct allegations against 297 officers and deputies. While the precise terms of the agreements varied, most promised to either destroy disciplinary records, hide them in confidential folders or change them to reflect an alternate outcome. In many cases, the deals ensured that only certain information would be released to a potential future employer. At least five officers secured clean-record agreements from multiple agencies.

This is so needed and well framed
Imagine that your health care required objective justification, if access to birth control or erectile dysfunction medications required proving that you were having monogamous sex, or good sex, or sex at all. Or if fertility care was provided only if you could prove that becoming a parent would make you happy, or you would be a good parent. Or that abortion would be available only if you could prove that it would improve your life. In a free society we agree that these are private matters, decided by individuals and their families, with the support of doctors using mainstream medical science as a guide, even when they involve children. We invite politicians and judges into them at great peril to our freedom.

My sister was there. The vitriolic speakers who were not from HB were Proud Boys, and they were filming dissenting speakers.
The City Council wasted more than four hours on the subject Tuesday, giving the floor to sometimes vitriolic speakers — many of whom might not have even been city residents — with opinions on something that will have no effect. In the end, the conservative majority on the council voted to go forward with an ordinance.

Adoption as a system is supposed to be about finding homes for children who need them, not about finding babies for parents who want them. I also think that as more and more of our adoption in the United States is transracial adoption, the promise of white parents adopting children of color becomes this post-racial bona fide. I don’t think that’s why most of them do it, but I do think that there’s this idea that we can form families: biology doesn’t matter, race doesn’t matter, communities of origin don’t matter. Love is what makes a family. That’s this progressive liberal idea, and it’s not actually born out in the impacts that we see for adopted people and their families.

I've unlearned so much in the wake of the fall of Roe about how adoption is framed in this country. And shout out to Little Fires Everywhere for illustrating the emotional landscape of this issue so fearlessly.
The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade while you were working this book. How will (or won’t) Dobbs change the adoption industry? We saw from the Turnaway Study that when you deny people access to abortion, the vast majority of them are parenting. So you’re not going to have a huge surge in adoption. [The number of adoptions] is going to be vastly outnumbered by the number of people who are parenting children that they did not intend to parent at that time in their lives. And so this raises the question: How are we actually going to support these families?

I think they want to have slightly edgy or controversial speakers in the belief that they can do an interview on stage that might challenge them. But they’re just not equipped for that.” Farouky gave the example of the billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s appearance at Ted in 2022, which he described as “a puff piece”. “The whole setup of the conferences just has no capacity to really interrogate ideas. It’s a celebration of the individual. It’s not a space for free debate at all,” he said.

Humphrey apologized but then doubled down. He said: “I apologize for using the word Hispanic, but I was not wrong. Again, these are Hispanic. Reality is they are Hispanic. There’s nothing to be ashamed with.” Humphrey said he will go back to the bill and amend the language from “Hispanic” to “undocumented here illegally, or something like that”. If passed in the Republican-controlled legislature, the bill would become law and take effect on 1 November. Humphrey did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
