The nickel refinery sits near culturally significant sites like the Wichita Mountains and the historic Deyo Mission Road Baptist Church in an already industry inundated area. Good Year Rubber and Tire is there, as well as Republic Paper and a plastics factory.

This story took me to Southwest Oklahoma, where I connected with Indigenous leaders of Honor the Earth and Westwin Resistance, attended KCA and city council meetings, and waited alongside Comanche elders for answers from there leaders on why this development was happening. 🧵
