The mariko thing i never actually viewed as sequel bait. Just there being lasting consequences for what happened throughout the movie.
And godzilla coming back in the end while sequel bait, it would be a bit more powerful if this is just srtraight up where it ends. No further explaination

Pun absolutely intended. But who knows, we'll see. I just think the first one is a really good standalone movie and if i could greenlight sequels to a couple of alone standing movies my first few picks definitely wouldnt land on minus one

There were some set ups yeah, but i feel this movie could be left a lot better without a sequel. It makes sense for the movies were godzilla is a superhero to have sequels, but this one is such a good stand alone tale about survivors guilt and war. Him overcoming godzilla would kinda be made null
