On a long distance train & a woman has been on with a budgie in a special budgie rucksack. And I’ve finished my first James Baldwin book. And the man behind me is frequently softly groaning. It’s a lot here.

In Leeds last night 3 young Syrian men were in the street playing music and dancing and waving Syrian & Palestinian flags. One of them told me it was “it’s the best day ever”. Beautiful 🇸🇾🇵🇸

More Day of the Jackal thoughts. I enjoy a good car chase & gun fight as much as the next binge watcher. But when it comes to truly taking on the far right & capitalist class I like my power where I can see it - in the organised working class.

Binge-y Saturday night with Day of the Jackal. Enjoyable but as always with these things - absolutely rubbish depictions of left-wingers.

Nearly finished with ‘Paper Girls’ graphic novels. Volumes 5 & 6 requested from library. TBH I’m super confused by it all, but it’s so fun & the girl heroes I love, so I’ll just enjoy its world even if the robots/time travel/war fought over folds in time are a bit of a mystery to me. #AmReading

I’m reading a book that isn’t by a leftie or a poet. Feels weird.

Exciting day! I have for the first time ever submitted a poem. Went for the unpublished poetry prize with @mslexia.bsky.social as my first step. One goal for 2024 ticked off just in time.

I am deeply ashamed at how little I knew of the plight of the people from Chagos. This absolutely devastating graphic book by Florian Grosset tells of how the Chagossians were evicted to make way for a US military base in the Indian Ocean. The horrors & injustices she describes will never leave me 😡

Perfect analysis. I’m disappointed but if it passes eventually let’s keep fighting for public services.
Many people will feel relief from this result. Many others will feel fear. No one is cruel for being upset or selfish for cheering. But remember: this is only the start of the legislative process. And only the start of asking how the state can ease suffering - in life as well as death.

The "bluesky is an echo chamber" think pieces that keep popping up really tickle me because they show how certain people genuinely believe social media should be for debating and arguing and not talking about the things that make you happy and sharing art with the world.

If I love a poetry book - I’ll tell everyone. If I don’t - I would never consider issuing a public complaint to the writer. Super weird to even consider that. Spread artistic joy, nothing else 💫✨
Telling a writer, artist, musician, etc. that their work is shit on social media has always struck me as a weird flex.

Why do you feel the need to do it?

What do you expect them to do about it?

“I found the prose stilted and boring.”

“I’ll go back and change that right away, sir.”
