There's lots of positivity around, and it's good to see retailers behind this. The responsible ones will act. There's also exciting potential to build more evidence on what works through implementation: vital to ensure that Government can move to mandate measures if progress is slow or patchy. 6/

Finally, while this policy appears to cover a good portion of the food industry, we can't forget the Out of Home sector, where an increasing proportion of our consumption comes from. Levelling that playing field will be critical. 5/

Then there's the detail- home of the proverbial devil. Defining the targets (already done by the fab team at @nestauk.bsky.social), baseline, reporting structures, exemptions (please, no). This requires health experts in the room, mainly waving the aforementioned work around. 4/

However, and there is always a however with this stuff, the implementation will be critical. We've all been around long enough to see that the course of obesity policy never did run smooth. Delays, weakening, u-turns. Lack of accountability. All to watch out for as the rubber hits the road 3/

This is undoubtedly great news- mainly because it demonstrates proper recognition of the role the food environment plays in our health and the need for Government action. 2/
