She honestly didn’t know (I have frustrations about that), and she listened thoughtfully, asking questions and showing at least a form of compassion. People parrot what they hear. But today’s conversation gave me hope. Maybe there’s still humanity deep down? /2

The thesis of my book is simple: the command to love our neighbors as ourselves is a command to empathize with others. To call empathy a sin is to undermine the very core of Jesus’ teachings—as well as the life He lived. /4

I started writing the book in 2021, after observing believers and their lack of empathy throughout the pandemic—online and in person. 3/

In chapter 2, I reference an article by Joe Rigney, who described empathy as an “enticing sin.” The remainder of my work in the book essentially proves him wrong, using the life and teachings of Jesus as my foundation. 2/

No matter what, these birds sing. I reckon as a person of faith maybe the reason they do is because they know what matters most in all the world can never be taken from us & our Maker is unmoved, joyful & in full control &, best of all, I said BEST OF ALL, he has us a new day coming. A new creation.

Yes! This week I’ve been teaching my immigrant students about their rights. Tonight I tracked down a lawyer for one of my asylum seekers. There is work to be done! It helps me stay grounded instead of succumbing to the anxiety about their safety.

Me too.

What if it’s “take action first and ask questions later” about their immigration status and court cases? What can I do to help them if they’re raided in the night? And why are the very people who taught me about Jesus cheering this on? I know I’m not the only one who feels this so personally. 💔 /4

I’ve been told that it was just exaggerated rhetoric meant to win votes. I’ve been told my students are “safe.” But what if they aren’t? What if the threats and promises are not just rhetoric? What if my students don’t understand those asking them questions? The trauma they’ve already endured… 3/

I’ve tried to stay curious with those (esp family) who voted in favor of deportations. For the most part, they are simply (and intentionally?) uninformed. They don’t know the difference between documented or not; any of my students would be considered “illegal” to them. 2/
