By slowing water, opening flight lines, and feeding entire food webs, beavers aren’t just reshaping landscapes - they’re giving Britain’s bats a much-needed boost.
October 29, 2025 at 2:01 PM
All 18 British bat species are insectivorous, which means they feed on insects, many of which begin life in water.

When beavers create ponds and channels, they boost aquatic insect populations and, in turn, provide rich feeding grounds for bats.

How can beavers influence bat behaviour?

Two new studies across England and Wales reveal an astonishing increase in bat activity in beaver wetlands – thanks to how beavers shape habitats for both bats and their insect prey.

The results of the study show that beavers can improve habitats for many species on both immediate and legacy timescales.

The removal of beavers from much of the northern hemisphere disrupted the balance - but their return offers a rare opportunity to restore it.

Engineering a legacy: 54 years of beaver impact

A new study explores over five decades of beaver activity in southern Finland. While some benefits appear quickly, others emerge only later or after beavers leave an area.

The secret winter life of beavers

It’s a common misconception that beavers hibernate. In fact, they remain active all year round, even through the harshest winter months.

While many mammals retreat into hibernation, beaver activity drops, but they never truly switch off.

New research shows a clear pattern: the longer a beaver dam, the larger the pond.

This consistent link across diverse landscapes offers a fresh perspective - and a powerful new way to map and understand beaver-made habitats.

Partnerships like this are key to providing practical knowledge that allows them to respond appropriately on site.

Sharing this knowledge ultimately helps normalise the presence of beavers in the British landscape and fosters coexistence.

Recognising the challenge, our team was recently invited by
@ssencommunity.bsky.social to work with its tree-cutting teams to help them better understand beaver browsing, how they can protect trees near their network from foraging, and their own responsibilities regarding beavers' wellbeing.
