my cousin and my mom (women!) used to go to star trek conventions in the 70s and once made me call a college boyfriend during a family dinner at carmine’s to settle an argument about a star trek episode, tbh I grew up thinking it was a show for girls

maybe try to do things because you personally enjoy doing them, not because you want other people to like them/you

“well it’s only good if people actually put in the work in between these events”

yeah and how do you think they get the motivation to do that? sitting around and posting on the internet all day about how much everything sucks doesn’t seem to be very effective

ooo I haven’t been to the NC fair in like 20 years, it’s a really hard time of year for us to get to the US. I love the giant vegetables and also the cow milking where they used to give us little boxes of not-gross milk after we struggled to get anything to come out of the cow 😭

there’s a lot of data that shows that this just isn’t productive or sustainable from the business side of things (people get sick more often, they burn out, they produce less) - there’s a reason that we require vacations in Germany and it is sadly not really because we want to be nice to employees

fedex collects taxes here in germany and sends bills after delivery to the recipient for VAT for example so it’s definitely something they can do (all services do, ups, dhl, etc)
September 20, 2025 at 6:12 PM
that’s how it works with value added tax here in germany

I don’t think Americans do really know this in their hearts, instead they sort of assume all will be fine because it’s always been fine

historically we have more experience here with what happens when the people in charge (retroactively) change the rules after they have all your data

years ago i got in an argument with my US aunt who did not understand why (esp older) germans don’t want tracking of their health data & don’t usually register for things like protests, idk ppl from the US assume it’s harmless as long as they’ve not done anything wrong (but! who defines wrong?!)

is this even a real person?

as a former high school teacher in the US, what even is this? he sounds like he’s just mad that he wasn’t one of the cool kids???

but it feels sometimes like they’re getting upset because their optimistic and positive worldview is being challenged idk

from Germany I am often amazed at how easily Americans give up their data
