this morning, someone asked what's the best thing we can do right now.

i won't pretend to have the definitive answer, but here is what my own experience has taught me. i hope you might find some truth in it.

all love and goodwill to you, dear neighbor.

keep going.
first and foremost, be kind to yourself. eat, hydrate, clean up, get sleep, take care of your body to the best of your ability. second, be kind to one another. check in on your loved ones. make sure they're taking care of themselves, if they are unable to do so, help them to whatever degree you can. don't mistake your friend for an enemy. don't let differences in ideology create a barrier between yourself and your allies. all forms of authoritarianism thrive on the tactic of divide-and-conquer. so long as we turn each other away for differences in opinion on what's right, we aren't coming together about *what to do* - to collaborate, organize, solve problems, and save what we cherish. remember that for all our differences, we are united by a common threat. any surface detail beyond that is secondary. having those things in mind as a foundation: if you can, get involved in local politics, NPOs, coalitions, and grassroots movements. find the people helping your community and ask how you can contribute. you generally won't find this stuff online. go to physical spaces - community centers, LGBT centers, etc. if you're not sure where to look, ask friends if they know anyone. "i know a guy who knows a guy" is the lifeblood of all organizing. if you can't: live. survive. trust in yourself and those around you to do whatever needs to be done in the moment, as the moment comes. you have already endured more hardship in your life than anyone else will ever understand, and you're still here. recognize that whatever carried you through that past will carry you through whatever comes next. make art. make noise. make friends and connections. choose to do good every day. no amount of brutality can extinguish the human love in your heart. above all, live. one minute at a time. because that's all you're meant to do.
