1) 964 Pinocchio (1991, dir. Shozin Fukui) - Japanese cyberpunk-adjacent horror. Experimental, audacious, gross, and unnerving. A linear story that makes perfect sense, yet still doesn't spell literally everything out.

A review of 964 Pinocchio (1991), rating it 4 stars out of 5. It reads: "The sheer audacity of 964 Pinocchio surprised me. Some really deliberate pacing combined with a lot of grossly uncomfortable long shots, great usage of guerilla filmmaking, and a plot that feels like it comes together despite mostly just thriving on vibes. It clearly has a lot to say about the social isolation present when society others us and attempts to pass us off as objects for our uses in the eyes of capital rather than individuals with autonomy. There are shots in this movie I'll never have leave my memory, and it's leaving me with a lot to think about. Hell yeah."

I hadn't even heard of 964 Pinnochio until a few days ago when my wife watched it and then tried to explain it to me. If I had a nickel for every time this movie that I've never encountered before came up in the past week I'd have two nickels, not a lot, weird it happened twice, etc etc.
