Free-verse poem written by Bear Flinn Title: Blisters and Bedrock We wanted to build a better world One where sickness was treated Where hunger was sated A world where our daughters could be soft We were willing to carve it out of the bedrock covered in blisters But somewhere along the way we lost sight of that goal And ambition took the wheel Steered us towards power and riches Claiming it was only means to an end We fought endless battles in pursuit of a better world No one noticed when our daughters joined the fray We praised her wit Admired her resilience Congratulated her strength Only when the final blow was dealt did we realize our mistake No one asked why she needed guile Where she learned to take a hit How she built the strength to carry mountains Everything we had been fighting for was within reach But there’s nothing as undoing as a daughter We won the war Ignorant to the cost of our ambitions A price payed by those we wanted to protect Injuries and illness from our battles left untreated Hunger from famine caused by our destruction The softness of our daughters worn away Replaced by blisters from the bedrock we never carved In the pursuit of greatness We failed to do good - Bear Flinn
