Rather than vilifying AI users, why not focus on advocating for ethical standards in AI training and use? Encouraging transparency in datasets, fair compensation for artists whose work is used in training, and clear attribution practices would address many concerns without resorting to gatekeeping.

Not all AI users would have commissioned human artists in the first place. The binary assumption that AI use directly competes with traditional art is unfounded. Instead, AI often fulfills a different niche—one that expands creative participation rather than replacing it outright.

Calling AI use a statement of not caring about artists paints with too broad a brush. Many users of AI tools do care about art. AI can democratize creativity for those who would otherwise be excluded. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t address ethical issues.

You suggest alternatives like Canva or unpaid collaborations, but this also devalues artists. Canva templates are created by artists, often for a fraction of what they'd. Similarly, asking artists to “donate” their art is arguably more exploitative than using AI, as it relies on free labor.

the "You can either afford an artist/stock art, or you can't." argument is flawed imo. Many people who make gen AI continent would have never had the money to hire someone. My partner charges hundreds of dollars for a commission, midjourney is 10 bucks a month.
