Reminder that everything old is new again. Reading “A Little History of the United States” and this section felt too familiar.

“America should be American, they protested”

Strikes and riats, homeless people wandering the streets, cities swarming with strange immigrants... such scenes frightened many Americans. America should be American, they protested. It should be more pure-which was another way of saying more like themselves. The nation would become one rather than many by setting apart people who looked different, thought differently, or acted differently. During the 1890s, groups of Americans who. seemed foreign began to be looked down upon and kept apart-segregated. Colleges, social clubs, and resorts decided not to admit Jews, even if they had before. Groups like the American Protective Organization worked to pass laws keeping out immigrants. (The pope, they falsely claimed, was encouraging Catholic immigrants to murder Americans.) In dozens of ways, life in the United States became segregated in hopes of making it more "pure." Baseball's major and minor leagues shut out Black players after 1898, leaving them to form their own "Negro leagues." Schools were segregated, separating not only Black children but also Mexican Americans from whites. In the South, state legislatures passed laws to complete the process of segregation, right down to separate water fountains for "whites" and "colored" Worse, the new laws made it all but impossible for Ples} southern African Americans to vote. When Black people challenged the whole idea of segregation, the Supreme Court ruled, in the case of Plessy v. Ferguson, that so long as states treated each
