Idle thoughts - I wonder if there are links to the steady stream of 'you can do anything you put your mind to', and individualism more widely. If you internalise that properly then *not* being in your ideal position means you've failed, so lots of anger and resentment finding easy targets.

But the larger question is do they really believe they can get through the whole parliament without breaking that promise? Because if they actually want to improve public services etc that seems unlikely, in which case raising taxes doesn't get any easier the longer you leave it!
