Petition to the Government of Canada Whereas: According to the Alzheimer Society, nearly 1 million people in Canada will be living with dementia by 2030 and this will increase to more than 1.7 million by 2050; According to Public Safety Canada, 60% of people living with dementia will go missing at some point. If a person with Alzheimer’s disease is not found within 12 hours of being lost, there is a 50% chance that they will be found injured or dead from hypothermia, dehydration, or drowning. This makes any search an emergency; Silver Alert is a system that will provide notification when a vulnerable adult with dementia or other cognitive impairment goes missing so they can be brought home safely; According to researchers from the University of Waterloo, Faculty of Health, older adults who get lost and go missing are usually within four to 12 kilometres of their last known location. Silver Alerts to mobile devices could be geographically targeted to a local area; and Amber Alerts exist for vulnerable children. Many adults living with dementia are similarly vulnerable, but they are not yet protected by a similar system. We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to coordinate with provincial authorities and local law enforcement to develop a National Silver Alert System, which will geographically target mobile devices and broadcast to media information concerning missing vulnerable adults. Silver Alerts will save lives.

I had just met with her on the 10th AND the 11th and she was telling me how she was looking forward to her holiday. She was boarding the plane when she had a heart attack.
Surrey resident Aman Grewal, former president of the BC Nurses Union, died April 15 after suffering a heart attack while preparing to board a plane, according to a family member. She was 58. "It was the first sign of a heart problem for her," Grewal's brother-in-law, John Kageorge, told the Now-Leader. A nurse for 37 years at Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH), Grewal got involved with her union during a strike in 1989, becoming BCNU president during the COVID-19 pandemic for a two-year term, 2021 to 2023. Grewal is remembered as a woman who "embodied strength, compassion and unwavering dedication to others," an obituary notes. "Aman’s presence brought people together. In times of crisis, she was often the first at the bedside, offering her strength and comfort. In times of joy, she lit up the room with laughter, warmth and the inclusive spirit that defined her." At SMH, Grewal discovered her calling in pediatrics and pediatric emergency care. Later becoming the first Indo-Canadian elected president of BCNU, Grewal is noted as "a driving force behind major advocacy efforts, including British Columbia’s implementation of Canada’s first standard for nurse-to-patient ratios, a testament to her lifelong pursuit of justice and dignity for both patients and nurses." B.C. Premier David Eby is among those paying tribute to Grewal, calling her a “fierce advocate” for health care workers on the X social media platform. Services for Aman Grewal will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26 at Riverside Funeral Home in Delta, for family and friends, followed by a sahaj paath bhog (reading of Sikh scriptures), 4 p.m. at the Ross Street temple in Vancouver. On Sunday (April 27) at 1 p.m., a Celebration of Life, open to Grewal's health-care colleagues and community, is planned at the UBC Lecture Theatre in Surrey Memorial Hospital. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Surrey Hospitals Foundation, "in honour of Aman's lifelong commitment to care." Did you know the probability of survival for a person with dementia in an urban setting is almost identical to that of a hiker (if not injured) in a wilderness setting?

The survival rate in the first 24 hours is 77%
This drops to 60% at 48 hours

We were shocked to learn of the death of our board member, friend, and colleague Aman Grewal yesterday.
Aman was well known in the nursing community and throughout BC. She was a nurse for over 35 years, former president of the BC Nurses Union, insightful, compassionate and caring.
